THE SIDELINES : Philips’ Last Seeded Player Out

Top-seeded Jay Berger, the last of the seeded players, was ousted from the Philips Open tennis tournament today, losing to Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Cherkasov, ranked 67th in the world, won 14 of the last 19 games.

In another quarterfinal, Juan Aguilera of Spain beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 6-4, 6-4.

The two remaining French players split their matches. Guy Forget beat Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, and 17-year-old Fabrice Santoro lost to Marc Rosset, a 19-year-old Swiss, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.

Santoro eliminated defending champion Andrei Chesnokov on Thursday.

Berger was preceded to the sidelines by seven other seeded players, five going out in the first round.
