Monday’s scheduled makeup game between USC and Arizona State must be played, Pacific-10 Conference Commissioner Tom Hansen says.

Arizona State officials had suggested that it be canceled in the wake of Saturday night’s benches-clearing brawl in Tempe, Ariz., which led to suspension of five players from each team. On Thursday, the conference suspended USC outfielder John Jackson and Arizona State pitcher Kip Yaughn from Monday’s game. The two were among those given NCAA-mandated one-game suspensions, served Tuesday, in the wake of the brawl.

“We have taken steps beyond normal game arrangements, and we’re confident that the coaches and game management will ensure that there will be no problems,” Hansen said.

The game will make up for one that was rained out in February. It will be played at USC after Arizona State’s today-through-Sunday series at UCLA.
