Al Unser Jr. Drives 90.003 M.P.H. to Win Pole Position at Long Beach
For the second consecutive year, Al Unser Jr. will start on the pole today in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, race No. 2 in the $20-million PPG/CART Indy Car series.
Unser, 28, drove a 90.003-m.p.h. lap in his Lola-Chevy late in the final qualifying session Saturday to beat the Team Penske trio of Emerson Fittipaldi (89.880), Rick Mears (89.836) and Danny Sullivan (89.442) in the most tightly bunched field in Long Beach history.
Last year, Unser parlayed his pole victory to one in the race, his second in a row on the 1.67-mile temporary circuit at Long Beach.
The 95-lap race will start at 1 p.m.
