Inner-City Theater, Jazz Classes: CalArts, Plaza de la Raza and the Watts Towers Arts Center will collaborate on two yearlong pilot programs this fall in an instructional program of theater and jazz. Funded by a $40,000 grant from Arco, the two programs will send CalArts theater and jazz instructors to the inner city. The Plaza program will culminate with a bilingual production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” called “Nuestro Barrio” next spring. CalArts jazz instructors and master students will work with eight high schools in the Watts Towers area to eventually present two jazz concerts next spring and possibly form a high school jazz band.
