‘Turtles’ Reaps $9.9 Million in Weekend Sales

Those “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” continue to dominate the box office.
With weekend ticket sales of an estimated $9.9 million, New Line Cinema’s PG-rated turtle tale has grossed about $89.5 million--after just four weeks.
Touchstone Pictures’ “Pretty Woman” also continued its winning streak, with ticket sales of about $8.2 million, for the No. 2 spot. The R-rated romance, about a corporate executive (Richard Gere) who finds love with the proper hooker (Julia Roberts), has grossed about $71.6 million.
In the No. 3 spot--and getting close to the prestigious $100 million mark--was a Paramount Pictures’ stalwart, “The Hunt for Red October.” Ticket sales were about $3.5 million, for grosses of an estimated $95 million.
Orion Pictures’ just-out “Miami Blues”--a black and blue (and blood-red) comedy-drama about the exploits of sometimes-likeable sociopath Alec Baldwin--earned about $3 million to take fourth place.
Fifth place went to Touchstone’s “Ernest Goes to Jail,” which earned about $2.8 million, for cumulative grosses of about $17.2 million.
Rounding out the weekend: “The First Power” (Orion), with estimated ticket sales of $2.5 million and a cumulative total of $15.6 million; “Crazy People” (Paramount), an estimated $2.3 million, $7.8 million cumulative; “I Love You to Death” (Tri-Star), an estimated $1.8 million, $10.9 cumulative; “Driving Miss Daisy” (Warner Bros.), an estimated $1.7 million, $93.1 cumulative.
