Avon Products Inc.: Profit for the first quarter soared 145% to $15.2 million from a year earlier, while sales were $703.8 million, down fractionally. The New York company credited cost reductions. A small gain from the sale of the Parfums Stern retail fragrance subsidiary was offset by takeover defense costs.
