A weekly roundup of Southland graduation ceremonies. Pepperdine University

Pepperdine University’s Seaver College conferred degrees on 432 graduates Friday, with 260 receiving a B.A., 139 receiving a B.S., 23 receiving an M.S. and 10 receiving an M.A.. Charles R. Swindoll, senior pastor at First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton (Dallas Theological Seminary, 1963), delivered the keynote address . From his prepared text:

“The best leaders . . . are thinkers. . . . It is risky to think . . . to break molds. All that adds up to being lonely. Get used to it! It’s unpopular to question and assault traditionalism.”

Honorary doctor of laws degrees were awarded to Swindoll and Dallas real estate developer Trammell Crow. Tracy Clark, an accounting major from Buhl, Ida., was class valedictorian .

Art Center College of Design

Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, held its 120th commencement on Saturday. Degrees were confered on 116 graduates with 88 receiving a B.F.A., 25 receiving a B.S. and three receiving an M.F.A. Randolph M.N. McAusland (Princeton, 1957), director of the Design Arts Program, National Endowment for the Arts, delivered the commencement address. From his prepared text:

“Heavy industry, standing armies and sprawling territories will no longer be the measure of national wealth. The enduring nations will be artistic, creative and original.”

Looking Ahead

Azusa Pacific University in Azusa holds its 90th annual commencement at 10 a.m. May 5. Dr. Richard C. Halverson, chaplain of the U. S. Senate, will be the keynote speaker. Ceremonies are open to the public.

Master’s College in Newhall will feature keynote speaker Gregory Ivanovich Komendant at commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. May 5. Komendant is president of the Union of Evangelical Christian-Baptists in the Soviet Union. Ceremonies are open to the public.
