2nd Hiring Center for Day Laborers to Open
- Share via
Los Angeles will open its second hiring center for day laborers at a site in the San Fernando Valley community of Sun Valley, the coordinator for the city day labor program said Monday.
The center, expected to open within weeks, will be operated by two supervisors out of a trailer on the site. While the workers wait for jobs, they will have access to portable toilets. They can also drink coffee, munch on Mexican sweet bread and learn English in classes--all free.
The city is moving ahead with the facility, which will cost about $3,500 a month, despite a small decline in participation at the hiring center in Harbor City, the first of seven planned centers.
