NATION : Bush to Grant Nicaragua Aid
President Bush will use his emergency authority to provide $2.6 million in medical aid to Nicaragua as a show of support for new President Violeta Chamorro when she is inaugurated Wednesday, congressional and Administration sources said today.
Bush’s request for $300 million in economic aid to Nicaragua, including money needed for spring planting of crops and for fuel, is snarled by unrelated disputes on Capitol Hill and is unlikely to be approved in time for Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony.
The medical aid will provide a visible gesture that can be announced by Vice President Dan Quayle when he attends the ceremony in Managua.
