The Boston Celtics announced they will not add guard Brian Shaw to their roster for the playoffs.
The Celtics, who open a best-of-five series with the New York Knicks Thursday at the Boston Garden, had until Monday to decide whether to add Shaw, who jumped from the NBA just before training camp to play for Il Messaggero Roma of the Italian League.
The Celtics announced Feb. 27 that they had reached agreement with the 6-foot-6 guard on a multiyear contract beginning next season.
Shaw, of UC Santa Barbara and the Celtics’ top 1988 draft pick, averaged 8.6 points in his rookie season. In Italy, he and former Duke forward Danny Ferry are teammates.
