CSUN Center Receives Grant to Train Teachers

Share

The Center for Cancer and Developmental Biology at Cal State Northridge has received a $420,000 federal grant to train 92 teachers from the Montebello Unified School District.

The grant, part of the federal Dwight D. Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Education Program, is intended to help four teachers from each of the district’s 23 schools become science leaders who will teach other teachers.

Although some middle school teachers will be included, elementary education is the focus of the project because students often show their first interest in science in the lower grades, said CSUN Prof. Steven B. Oppenheimer .

“I believe that Montebello will become a model to show what can be done to change the course of the present crisis in science education in the United States,” he said.
