Chargers Sign Five Free Agents

The Chargers announced the signings of five free agents on Wednesday:

Willie Davis, cornerback, Southern Illinois (5-feet-10, 185); Wayne Dickson, inside linebacker, Oklahoma (6-3 253); Derick Dednam, defensive end, North Caroline State (6-2 1/2, 255); Tony Gunn, defensive lineman, UNLV (6-5, 310) and Wendell Jones, wide receiver, Grambling (5-10, 175).

BASEBALL

NAIA school Azusa Pacific dealt host U.S. International a 16-6 loss, finishing things off in the ninth with six runs. USIU fell to 12-36-1. Azusa is 28-10.

The Master’s routed Point Loma Nazarene, 13-6, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. PLNC got two home runs, the first with the bases empty by Brad Harden and the second a three-run homer by Mark Ratekin.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Laura Richards of Vista High has signed a letter of intent at USD, Torera Coach Sherri Stephens announced. Richards won the 1989 national hardcourt doubles championship and is ranked No. 3 nationally in doubles and 32nd in singles. Julie McKeon, the Illinois state singles champion, and Kara Brady, a two-time Missouri state champion, also signed.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Myles Gabel, 33, was named assistant to Rudy Suwara at San Diego State. Gabel had a 59-39 record in three years at New Mexico State. He fills a position vacated by Sue Hegerle, who is now USD’s coach.
