MOORPARK : Special-Education Staff to Be Increased

With the parents of handicapped children standing by, Moorpark Unified School District trustees disregarded the advice of administrators and voted earlier this week to hire a new teacher and a part-time aide for an overcrowded special-education program at Peach Hill Elementary School.
Two special-education programs at the school were combined last year because of a lack of space, Trustee Cynthia Hubbard said. One teacher and a part-time aide now teach 19 students with learning disabilities and communicative handicaps, she said.
“It’s too much commotion,” said one parent at Tuesday’s meeting. “We just feel that 19 students in one classroom is way too many with only one aide.”
The district lacks classroom space because of a lack of funds to construct new schools, Supt. Tom Duffy said.
Duffy said he recommended against hiring the additional part-time aide and full-time teacher because spending the money without considering budgetary priorities is bad policy.
