A robber who said he had a gun stole about $2,100 from a Carlsbad bank Thursday in the second bank robbery there this week by a man of similar description, police said.

The bandit, described as a heavy-set black man, 20 to 30 years old, held up the HomeFed Bank at 7020 Avenida Encinas about 3:50 p.m., Lt. Joe Hasenauer said. The man was described as wearing a white sun visor and black pants, and was last seen running east.

He is suspected of being the bandit who robbed a Coast Savings office at 2520 El Camino Real of about $700 Tuesday, Sgt. Jim Byler said. Definitive evidence will come when bank pictures are developed, he said.

Both robberies share several characteristics: they occurred at roughly the same time, the robber was on foot and he handed the teller a note threatening to use a gun but never displayed one.
