Rockets Kill 5 in Kabul on Coup Date
A dozen rockets struck the Afghan capital of Kabul and killed five people Friday, the 12th anniversary of the bloody coup that began Communist rule in Afghanistan, Radio Kabul reported.
Friday’s attack came on the anniversary of the April 27, 1978, coup that overthrew Mohammed Daoud and brought Communist leader Nur Mohammed Taraki to power.
Within two years of the 1978 coup, more than 100,000 Soviet soldiers entered the Central Asian country to replace one Communist government with another and to battle a burgeoning Muslim insurgency.
After nine years of direct involvement, Moscow withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in 1989, but rebel fighters vowed to continue their struggle against the Kabul regime.
