President Bush urged tens of millions of forgetful or negligent Americans Friday to finally “stand up and be counted” by filling out and returning overdue census forms.

Speaking to the American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative group of state legislators and business leaders, Bush said: “I simply want to take this opportunity to urge every American who has not returned the census form to do so.”

“Stand up and be counted,” said Bush, noting the data that the forms provide will help the states and the federal government plan for the future.

The Census Bureau had originally hoped that 70% of the more than 90 million forms put in the mail at the end of March would be returned by the April 20 deadline. But it got just 63%.
