How to Get There and What Else to See
The Tyler-Spite House, 112 W. Church St., Frederick, Md. 21701, (301) 831-4455, is about an hour’s drive by car from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, and is in Courthouse Square, the city’s historic district.
Frederick County is rich with historic sites, and many visitors come to shop at the many antique shops in the area. Near Spite House is Francis Scott Key’s former law office, which is now asmall home, and the former home of William Tyler Page, author of the “American Creed.”
Other points of interest include the Historical Society and Museum; Old Opera House; Ramsey Home visited by Abraham Lincoln; home of John Hanson, who was the first president of the United States under the Articles of Confederation, 1781; Barbara Fritchie Home & Museum; R. B. Taney/F. S. Key Museum; Hessian Barracks, and the Frederick Academy of Visitation.
Tours are available from the city’s Visitor Center. They are escorted walking tours, self-guided walking, driving and cycling tours and group and bus tours. For times, dates and reservations, call (301) 663-8687.
The Spite House has six rooms, two on each of its three floors. The larger rooms feature sitting areas, big beds and fireplaces. Rates are $90-$120, Friday thru Sunday, $75 Monday through Thursday.
