The Phantom of the Opera (Showtime Sunday at noon): The lush 1943 Technicolor remake, deftly directed by Arthur Lubin, remains the only version that can be mentioned in the same breath with the 1925 original. Claude Rains is a truly tragic phantom. (1:32)
Alexander Nevsky (TNT Sunday at 7 p.m.): Sergei Eisenstein’s 1938 masterpiece stars Nikolai Cherkassov in the title role and tells of Russian resistance to a 13th-Century German invasion. It’s a prophetic parable with justly famous battle scenes. (2:20)
Eyes Without a Face (Bravo Saturday at 9 p.m.): Georges Franju’s elegant, poetic 1959 horror film about a demented doctor (Pierre Brasseur) determined to restore his daughter’s disfigured face is greatly enhanced by Maurice Jarre’s haunting, insistent score. (1:30)
