MISSION VIEJO : City OKs $22,000 to End Wall Dispute

Share

The City Council has approved spending $22,000 to end the Mission Viejo Lake wall controversy.

The money will pay for restoring the landscaping destroyed last summer when the Lake Mission Viejo Assn. began work to install a wall around a 1,600-foot stretch of the lake’s south side.

When residents near the lake’s south shore noticed the construction, they stormed to the next City Council meeting and won a council-ordered halt to the work.

The residents complained that the wall would obstruct their views of the lake; the Lake Assn. countered that views would be minimally blocked. Proponents of the wall said it would provide a sound barrier against the traffic on neighboring streets.

Later attempts by the Lake Assn. to persuade the council to reverse the building moratorium were unsuccessful.

And because the group had been issued a building permit from the city, the Lake Assn. refused to pay for cleaning up the construction site.

The funds authorized by the city will pay for roto-tilling, mulching and repairing an irrigation system and re-soding the site, said Clint Sherrod, community development director.

Restoration work is scheduled to begin early next week and should be completed within five to seven days, Sherrod said.
