MISSION VIEJO : Law Bans Sex-Item Sales Near Minors

Share

A law banning the sale of sexual paraphernalia in areas accessible to minors was passed by the City Council.

By a unanimous vote, the council agreed to require merchants stocking sexually oriented merchandise to sell those items in a room off-limits to minors.

The council was ready to pass the ordinance at its March 26 meeting but asked City Atty. Scott Field to clarify wording about display of contraceptives.

The law will allow all businesses, from supermarkets to gasoline stations, to display contraceptives.

The ordinance was initiated by Councilwoman Victoria Jaffe, who was shopping at Spencer’s Gifts in the Mission Viejo Mall during the Christmas holidays when her two children commented on a rack of of sexually oriented gifts.

The ordinance joins a city law passed last fall that requires Mission Viejo merchants to cover adult magazines and video cassette cases.
