The older brother of former South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan, convicted of embezzlement, will be released today under an amnesty that will also benefit 1,077 other prisoners, the Justice Ministry said Monday.

Chun Ki Hwan, who has served 18 months of his two-year sentence, was convicted of embezzling about $2 million from a state-aided fish market during his brother’s presidency.

After eight years of iron-fisted rule, the younger Chun stepped down in February, 1988, without seeking reelection.
