Six men and one woman have been inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. They are Evelyn Ashford, Dr. Robert A. (Bobby) Brown, Stan Cole, Denny Crum, Norm Duncan, Mike Marienthal and Mike Warren.

Ashford received the Broderick Award as the nation’s outstanding woman track athlete while at UCLA and won acclaim as the world’s best woman sprinter in the 1970s. She competed in the Olympic Games three times and won two gold medals, one in 1984 and the other in 1988.

Brown, president of baseball’s American League, starred for the Bruin baseball team during the 1940s and also for the New York Yankees. He served in the Navy in World War II and earned his medical degree during his years as a professional player. He practiced as a cardiologist and served as interim president of the Texas Rangers before being named American League president in 1984.

Cole was a three-time All-American water polo player on three undefeated UCLA teams and was a member of U.S. Olympic teams in 1964, 1968 and 1972. He was also a champion swimmer who won a gold medal at the 1967 Pan American Games.

Crum, University of Louisville basketball coach for 19 years, was a starting guard for Coach John Wooden in 1958 and 1959, coached UCLA freshman basketball and was Wooden’s assistant before being named Louisville’s coach in 1972. His teams at the Kentucky school have won two NCAA championships and reached the Final Four six times.

Duncan starred in football, boxing and ice hockey at UCLA from 1929 through 1931, and later coached freshman football, ice hockey and boxing at his alma mater. He served in the Army in World War II and returned to become head of UCLA’s physical education department before retiring in 1972.

Marienthal, a guard and linebacker on UCLA’s first Rose Bowl team in 1942, was wounded in combat as a Marine officer in World War II. He served as an assistant coach and scout for UCLA after the war and was a coach, teacher and principal in the Los Angeles Unified School District until his 1983 retirement. For 44 years he has served as UCLA’s official basketball scorer.

Warren, an All-American basketball guard in 1968, helped the Bruins win two NCAA championships, and UCLA had a 59-1 record in his last two seasons. He finished as the school’s seventh-best career scorer. He is an actor and producer in television and motion pictures.

West Los Angeles College basketball players Anthony Gates and David Hollaway have signed letters of intent, Gates with Cal Poly Pomona and Hollaway with UC Irvine. WLAC football player David Hodge has signed with San Francisco State.

Gates, a 6-foot, 3-inch forward, was a two-time All-Western State Conference selection. Last year he averaged 18.9 points and 10.8 rebounds and finished as WLAC’s second-best career rebounder. Hollaway, a 6-2 guard, averaged 14.9 points in 1989-90.
