THE SIDELINES : China High Jumper Zhu Retires
Zhu Jianhua, a former world record-holder in the high jump who could never reach the high expectations of his countrymen, has retired at age 27.
Zhu, who became a national hero when he broke the world record three times in 1983 and 1984 but was later plagued by poor performances and injuries, announced his retirement before 10,000 fans at a Shanghai gymnasium Monday, the China Daily said today.
The Shanghai native vaulted to prominence at age 18 in 1981 when he broke China’s national record with a jump of 7 feet, 6 inches.
