THE SIDELINES : Sweden Beats U.S. in Handball

Magnus Andersson scored six points as world champion Sweden defeated the United States 25-20 today in the opening match of the Japan Cup team handball tournament.

Sweden led 15-8 in the first half, but the United States rallied in the second half with 12 points to Sweden’s 10. Matt Ryan scored four points for the United States.

In the women’s competition, South Korea trounced Japan 30-19.

Sweden, the United States and Japan are competing in the men’s round-robin competition and Japan, South Korea and France are participating in the women’s competition.
