Ocumed Inc., Dansol Division, of Sarasota, Fla., has recalled a non-prescription eye wash found contaminated with bacteria that could cause serious vision damage, it was announced today.

About 2,800 4-ounce plastic bottles of the eye wash have been distributed nationwide with the “Rugby” brand name, officials said.

The bottles have the lot number N4189 stamped on the bottom and are labeled as being manufactured for Rugby Laboratories Inc., of Rockville Centre, N.Y., officials said.

Tests by the company and the Food and Drug Administration found samples of the eye wash contained pseudomonas cepacia, an organism that could cause an infection that could lead to “a potential for loss of vision” in people whose eyes are scratched or damaged, a company statement said. However, no injuries have been reported involving the eye wash, according to the statement, which was distributed by the FDA.
