UCSD Wins Water Polo Title
The UC San Diego women’s water polo team capped its first undefeated season with its second national championship Sunday by defeating UC Davis, 9-3, in the USA Collegiate Nationals at Brown University.
The Tritons, the top-seeded team, finished 26-0-1.
Brenda Reiton led the way with three goals. Jamie Dailey added two goals. Reiton, who led UCSD in the tournament with 16 goals, and and Jefi Paulsen were named to the All-American team. Dailey was selected to the second team, and Kristen Larson was honorable mention.
VINTAGE AUTO RACING
Fred Cziska of Pacifica won the feature class--the A & B Super Sport and Formula A--at the second Rodger Ward Invitational in the San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium parking lot.
In a 1971 Can-Am Shadow, Cziska, 48, won with an average speed of 108.5 miles per hour. Cziska, an auto dealership manager, has been racing vintage cars for five years.BASEBALL
Three school records were set as San Diego State completed a four-game sweep of Colorado State with a 27-10 Western Athletic Conference rout in Fort Collins.
The Aztecs set single-game records for runs (27) and hits (29).
Brian Grebeck would have tied several others for most hits in a game by going five for seven with three runs batted in, but Derrick Vineyard had six singles and a walk in eight trips.
SDSU (37-20, 17-7) moved into a first-place tie with Wyoming. Brigham Young is a half-game back at 16-7-1.
U.S. International jumped to an early three-run lead but fell to UCLA, 6-3, in Westwood. Kyle Sebach (2-4) was the loser for USIU (13-41).
GOLF
San Diego State finished fourth in the Western Athletic Conference men’s championships at Texas El Paso. Brigham Young won the tournament at 858. SDSU shot 897.
SDSU’s Doug Carney finished seventh at 216, nine strokes behind champion Paul Stankowski of Texas El Paso.
CREW
The University of San Diego men’s team was fifth behind winner UCLA in the varsity race of the Newport Regatta.
UC San Diego’s women’s team won the McNeish Trophy for most points (377) in the Oxnard All-American Regatta, considered the championship of Southern California.
UCSD won the varsity eight for the first time in 7:00.2 over the 2,00-meter course.
