SAN JOSE : New Leader to Take the Oath
An activist Costa Rican role on the world stage is expected to give way to a more domestic focus today when Rafael Calderon Fournier, the son of a former president, takes the oath of office in San Jose to succeed President Oscar Arias Sanchez.
The event marks the country’s ninth straight democratic transfer of power and consolidates a shift in the region to conservative civilian governments.
It also closes a chapter of regional peace initiatives that ended the Nicaraguan war, started cease-fire talks in El Salvador and earned Arias the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize.
