Lost Soviet Epic to Be Screened: The 1929 silent Soviet epic “New Babylon” will be given its Southern California premiere May 19 at UCLA. The 35-piece Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra will play Dmitri Shostakovich’s score at the Royce Hall screening. “New Babylon,” which depicts events surrounding the 1871 Paris Commune, premiered in 1929 in Leningrad and was not seen in its complete form again for nearly 50 years.
