Budget Woes for Los Angeles
“Austere Budget Offered by City Financial Staff” (Part B, April 26) pictures the Los Angeles City Council and the financial staff as a bunch of skinflints just because they wanted to lop off a few million from marginal services like street maintenance and traffic police. More balanced reporting would have pointed out that the council and staff can be quite generous in proposing 20% salary increases for the council’s senior staff. Also the uncanny ability of all levels of our city government to find money for really essential needs should have been mentioned. A case in point is Juanita St. John’s Africa-Los Angeles task force.
