Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Brad Gates on Wednesday received the Law Enforcement Professional of the Year Award from the California Peace Officers Assn.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions to law enforcement and public safety.

“I am honored beyond words by this award,” Gates said in a release. “It was earned not by me, but by the fine men and women of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the chiefs of police and the hard-working police officers and support staff of every police agency in Orange County.”

Gates was selected for the award because of his work in combatting drug trafficking, modernizing his department and expanding jail capacity in Southern California, association president Donald Forkus said.

Gates is the first recipient of the award, which will be presented by the association annually, said Forkus, who is the Brea police chief.
