COSTA MESA, NEWPORT BEACH : School Task Force Discusses Crowding
With enrollment at all four elementary schools in the Estancia High School zone expected to reach capacity in two years, officials of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District are taking the first steps toward stemming overcrowding.
A task force met Wednesday morning to discuss options, said Dale Woolley, a district spokesman.
Projections show that next year, Pomona and Whittier elementary schools will be full. By the 1991-92 school year, California and Wilson elementary schools will also be overcrowded, Woolley said.
One option is to open one of the five schools in the area that are now closed. New grade configurations for the zone will also be considered, Woolley said.
The greater number of children entering district schools at elementary level not only reflects the move of younger families to Costa Mesa but also the increase in births in that area, Woolley said.
