WORLD : Airliner, Fighters Nearly Collide
A British commuter airliner carrying 21 people nose-dived to avoid a possible collision with two U.S. jet fighter planes over West Germany, officials said today.
West German authorities said three passengers on board the twin-engine Hawker Siddley 748 commuter jet were injured in the incident near Saarbruecken along the French border. Two were taken to the hospital with neck injuries, authorities said.
The U.S. Air Force base in Bitburg said it was investigating what it called “a near-miss” between two 36th Tactical Fighter Wing F-15 jets and the Dan-Air plane.
