Peter Vermes scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick 12 minutes into the second half Wednesday night and the United States beat Poland, 3-1, in a World Cup warmup match.

Vermes, returning to the U.S. team after playing first-division soccer in the Netherlands, fired the ball past goalkeeper Jozef Wandzik after Piotr Czachowski of Poland was called for a handball in the penalty area.

Chris Sullivan, who came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute, scored six minutes later off a pass from John Harkes.
