THE SIDELINES : Padres Beat Slumping Cards

Garry Templeton and Bip Roberts hit two-run homers, and Roberto Alomar had four hits as the San Diego Padres beat the slumping St. Louis Cardinals 9-1 today.

Templeton’s home run, his first of the season, capped a five-run San Diego fourth inning. Bip Roberts hit his fourth homer in the ninth for San Diego’s final two runs.

After tying a team record with three doubles the night before, Alomar had two more today along with two singles.

Dennis Rasmussen (3-1) scattered seven St. Louis hits and also singled and scored ahead of Roberts’ homer. Joe Magrane (0-6) lost for the eighth consecutive time in 13 starts since last Aug. 29.

The Cardinals have lost six of their last seven.

Ozzie Smith singled and doubled for the Cardinals, who have scored three or fewer runs in seven of their last eight games.
