A homosexual activist group Thursday hailed a decision by two women entertainers to refuse to appear on “Saturday Night Live” with foul-mouthed comedian Andrew Dice Clay.

In a statement, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said it “applauds the decision” of Nora Dunn, a cast member of the NBC late-night show, and singer Sinead O’Connor to stay off the show after it was announced Clay was going to be host Saturday.

“Clay’s continued homophobic and sexist comments are offensive and perpetuate prejudice against gays, lesbians and heterosexual woman,” the statement said.

“Moreover, SNL is watched by many young people, and Dice’s ‘act’ only works to reinforce stereotypes and negative images that can lead to violence against minorities,” it added.

“If SNL is looking for a ‘ratings grabber,’ let them look elsewhere. Dice’s brand of humor is worse than offensive--it is dangerous.”

NBC did not respond to specific allegations, saying only that the show would meet the network’s own standards. “The content and performances on all ‘Saturday Night Live’ telecasts must conform to NBC broadcast standards,” the network said in a statement. “This Saturday’s program is no exception.”
