HUNTINGTON BEACH : Elizabethan Spirit Renewed on Campus

More than 15,000 people are expected at the Renaissance-A-Faire community festival at Golden West College today The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the community college campus, near Edinger and Golden West streets, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The theme is 16th-Century England in the time of Queen Elizabeth. A noon procession in the campus quad will be led by a mock Queen Elizabeth I and her entourage, including knights, ladies-in-waiting and court jesters. Bagpipe music will accompany the ceremony.

Costumes are optional, but festival officials encourage visitors to “wear Renaissance-period fashions and to enter the competition for best costume.”

The festival will feature wandering minstrels, a jousting contest, an antique car show, floral displays and food and game booths.

The city of Westminster, which donated $2,500 to help underwrite the event, is the host city for this year’s festival. The celebration, with varying themes, is held on campus each year to bring together the cities and communities served by Golden West College.
