Zalman Scherer; Superior Court Judge

San Diego Superior Court Judge Zalman J. Scherer, known for both his judicial skills and his concern for others, died in a San Diego hospital Thursday morning. He was 54.

The cause of death was not given.

Scherer was appointed to the Municipal Court in 1978, then named to the Superior Court, where he handled civil and criminal cases. He was supervising Superior Court judge in Vista in 1986 and 1987.

He served as president of the San Diego County Judges Assn. in 1982.

Scherer was born in West Virginia and came to San Diego in the 1960s from Arizona, where he got his law degree.

Survivors include his widow, Toby; a son, Scott, of San Diego; three daughters, Marlene Scherer and Michelle Robles, both of San Luis Obispo, and Dawn Scherer of San Diego, and sisters Betty Platnick of West Virginia and Revline Brooks of Arizona.
