TUSTIN : Population Exceeds 50,000, Mayor Says
The city’s population has grown to more than 50,000, Mayor Richard B. Edgar has announced.
According to figures released by the state Department of Finance, the city’s population climbed from 46,753 in January, 1989, to 49,409 this past January. Considering the rapid growth in East Tustin, city officials said the population is now at least 50,000--which is 16,000 more people than 10 years ago.
The larger population could have a financial benefit to the city. Cities with less than 50,000 people must go through the county for federal block grant funding. Those with larger populations can deal directly with the federal government and traditionally have received more funding, said Christine Shingleton, director of the city’s Community Development Agency. City Manager William A. Huston said he expects the population to continue rising.
