THE SIDELINES : Ex-Vanderbilt Coach Pace Dies

Former Vanderbilt football Coach and Athletic Director Billy Joe (Bill) Pace has died of a heart attack. He was 58.

Pace, who had no history of heart problems, collapsed Monday about 1:30 p.m. during a meeting at his Southern Trophy Shop. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Southern Hills Hospital.

Pace joined Vanderbilt in December, 1966, succeeding Jack Green as head coach. He compiled a 22-38-2 record over the next six years.

He served briefly as athletic director, then went on to be an assistant coach at Georgia Tech, Georgia and Tennessee. He retired in 1982.
