30 Garment Factories Cited in Crackdown

State labor inspectors, accompanied by Los Angeles city officials, cited 30 “underground” garment factories in Los Angeles for a variety of workplace safety and posting violations as part of a two-day crackdown on workplace safety that ended Wednesday.

Roger Miller, regional manager for the state Labor Department, said the infractions, most of them misdemeanors, include failure to register as a garment manufacturer, failure to post an entrance sign bearing the firm’s name and registration number in at least three-inch letters and failure to provide workers compensation records.

The surprise inspections at 65 businesses in and around the city’s garment district were done by staffers from the Labor Department, the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the city attorney’s office.
