WORLD IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA : Warning Issued to Separatist Republics
The collective state presidency, in a thinly veiled warning to the separatist republics of Croatia and Slovenia, said it plans to take urgent steps to hold the deeply divided country together. The eight-man presidency gave no details but said the measures to be announced to Parliament later this month are necessary to protect the “territorial and political integrity of the country.” The announcement came on the day that Slovenia established the first regional non-Communist government in Yugoslavia in almost 50 years and announced plans to abolish its secret police.
