The British government sent a list of convicted soccer hooligans to Italian authorities today and recommended that the rowdy fans be barred from attending World Cup matches next month.

The announcement by Home Secretary David Waddington, whose department is responsible for law and order in Britain, came one day after a flare-up of fan violence at an English soccer match. Fifty-eight people were charged with assault and other offenses after running onto the field Wednesday night in Newcastle during a playoff game against Sunderland. Nine police officers were injured in battles with fans.

More than 100 fans were arrested at several games around England on May 5, the final day of the English Soccer League season, with the worst violence and property destruction in the southern coastal city of Bournemouth.
