May Department Stores: The St. Louis-based department store chain reported a 25% jump in first-quarter earnings to $80 million compared to a year ago. Revenue rose 10% to a record $2.19 billion. The company said results reflected the opening of nine new stores, the sale of its Caldor subsidiary and discontinuance of its discount operation.
