Teachers Chip In to Help Young Scholar
A junior at Point Loma High School will be able to participate in a special program for promising scientists at the University of Notre Dame this summer as a result of teachers and administrators opening their pocketbooks this week.
Esmeralda Nava was among a select few female teen-agers nationwide named this week for the program, following a written competition, but found herself far short of the $1,200 needed for travel and expenses. She told her chemistry teacher that she would be unable to go.
The teacher, David Hamilton, decided to ask some of his colleagues if they might chip in a few dollars so that Nava could attend the institute. In less than 24 hours, Hamilton had $1,200 in hand.
