Nathan Monaster; TV, Film Writer
Nathan (Nate) Monaster, twice president of the Writers Guild of America, West, and a television and film writer with more than 100 shows to his credit, has died of heart failure.
A family spokesman said he died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 74.
He began as a radio writer on such classics as “Burns and Allen” and “Duffy’s Tavern,” moving to television with “The Milton Berle Show,” “Andy Griffith,” “December Bride” and “The Donna Reed Show,” among others.
He also wrote for films and was nominated for an Academy Award for “That Touch of Mink,” the 1962 Cary Grant comedy.
Monaster was president of the Writers Guild from 1963 to 1965, capping a 40-year membership in which he served on more than 50 committees.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys, three children and a granddaughter. A memorial service has been scheduled at the guild for June 13.
