The driver of a car that slammed into an encampment of homeless people, killing one, was sentenced Friday to two years in state prison for vehicular manslaughter.

Catherine Helen Hardie, 29, of Rancho Penasquitos, was taken into custody immediately after sentencing by Superior Court Judge Jesus Rodriguez.

Last Aug. 16, Hardie’s car hit three homeless people sleeping in shrubbery on a traffic island downtown as she tried to enter Interstate 5 from California 94.

Rodriguez also required that that Hardie pay $10,000 in restitution, one-third of which will go to the teen-age boys of the deceased victim, James Edward Gillam, 42.

The rest will be used to cover medical expenses for W. J. Davis, 53, who suffered a broken leg, and David Hendry, 42, who had a collapsed lung, broken ribs and internal injuries.
