Stacey Elliott, a reserve defensive tackle on the 1988 UCLA football team, recently was found not guilty on eight charges of battery and lewd conduct stemming from separate incidents last summer.

Two other counts were dismissed by Municipal Judge Ronald Schoenberg when a jury in West Los Angeles failed to reach a unanimous decision on those charges.

Five UCLA women testified that Elliott, 22, grabbed their buttocks or breasts in on-campus incidents last July and August.

Elliott is a 6-foot-1 1/2, 252-pound junior who played at Long Beach Poly High. He voluntarily removed himself from the Bruin team last year when he was formally charged by the L.A. City Attorney.

He did not participate in practice this spring because he was not enrolled in the spring quarter. His academic and athletic status is uncertain, said Jim Armstrong, Elliott’s attorney.

Three other UCLA players faced criminal charges in unrelated incidents over a four-month period last summer and fall.

“The accusations of Stacey Elliott were in the wake of everything else going on,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong said that the original identification of the suspect given to UCLA campus police did not resemble Elliott.

“The case should have never even been filed because it was a clear case of misidentification,” Armstrong said.
