HOORAY FOR GEORGE: Several pro football greats will headline a fund-raising event called “Long Beach Welcomes George Allen,” head football coach at Cal State Long Beach. Celebrities expected to attend include Milton Berle, Walter Matthau, Sylvester Stallone and former players Billy Kilmer, Roman Gabriel, Dick Bass, Tommy Mason, David (Deacon) Jones, Tom Mack and Jack Snow. The event is expected to raise $100,000 for the 49er football program. Dinner, at $100 a plate, is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Queen Mary and Spruce Goose.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL: Girl Scouts from throughout Long Beach will serve ice cream sundaes from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the El Ranchito Restaurant, 4040 Bellflower Blvd., Long Beach. Entertainment will be by the Circadian Rhythm Rock Band, magician Sherrie Jones and clowns. Proceeds will benefit the Greater Long Beach Girl Scout Council. Tickets are $5 a person or $15 for a family.
