SOFTBALL / NCAA REGIONAL : UCLA Caps Sweep on Another One-Hitter, 4-0

Freshman Heather Compton pitched her 12th shutout of the season, giving up one hit as UCLA beat Northern Iowa, 4-0, Saturday at UCLA’s Sunset Field to complete a two-game sweep and advance to the NCAA Division I softball World Series.

Compton (16-1) had a perfect game for four innings until giving up a walk to Deena Chipp and a single to Jenny McElmeel. Compton struck out 10.

The Bruins were led by sophomore designated player Kelly Inouye, who had two hits and drove in two runs. Junior right fielder Shanna Flynn also had two hits and scored once.

Northern Iowa (29-30) got only two hits in the two games. Lisa Longaker pitched for UCLA Friday.

UCLA (57-6), which has won the last two NCAA titles, will be making its eighth Series appearance in the last nine years. The Bruins will play Mideast Regional winner Kent State in the first round Wednesday at Oklahoma City.
