More Resorts and Hotels Are Offering Restaurant Discounts

An increasing number of resorts and hotels are offering mature travelers discounts not only on room rates but in their restaurants. Here are some additions:

Dana Point Resort, overlooking the ocean, is offering a 50% discount to seniors on all published rates for Sunday through Thursday. Regular rates, from $170 to $280 a night double occupancy, will be $85 to $140. On the same days, seniors get a 20% discount on dinner in the restaurant.

The resort, which has 42 acres of lawns interlaced with jogging, walking and bicycling trails, is within walking distance of Doheny State Beach Park, the Dana Point Marina and The Pavilion, a New England-style shopping area. Outrigger Hotels Hawaii has expanded its 50-Plus senior discount program, previously limited to its 22 hotels in Honolulu, to include hotels on Kauai, Maui and the Big Island, Hawaii. Tropicana Hotel, the first major Las Vegas resort to offer room discounts to mature travelers, has added a new discount incentive to its “Senior Privilege Program.” The program offers a 25% room discount seven days a week, which could mean a rate as low as $29.25 a night for two people. The Tropicana has added a two-for-one offer for its Follies Bergere show (cocktails only) twice nightly, and a 25% discount on all meals in the Island Buffet. The moderate buffet prices before discount are $1.99 breakfast, $2.74 lunch and $3.74 dinner. Show and buffet discounts are for hotel guests only. To qualify you must be at least 60 or belong to a recognized senior organization.

Hotel Condado Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has introduced a year-round 25% discount for travelers over age 60. During the summer season, which lasts until Nov. 30, the room rate (normally $120 to $195 a night for two) is $90 to $146 for seniors. The hotel, three miles from San Juan, was restored in 1982. Monterey Plaza Hotel, overlooking Monterey Bay, has created a “golden getaway” package effective through the end of the year. The three-day, two-night package includes accommodations, a daily buffet breakfast and two tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Guests who wish to tour the Del Monte Forest along 17-Mile Drive will be provided with complimentary picnic lunch.

Bed & Breakfast International is a California-based organization that arranges lodging in private dwellings from a houseboat to a penthouse. Almost all of the organization’s 300 available homes are in California, although a few are in Hawaii, Las Vegas and New York City.

Some hosts offer bed and breakfast and use of kitchen and laundry facilities, while others offer a complete apartment. Two nights minimum are required, and stays longer than one week can be arranged after meeting your hosts. In many instances, rates are less than $50 a night per room; others are somewhat higher, depending on type of accommodation, location and facilities.

For the Record: In a recent Mature Traveler column on San Francisco bargains for senior citizens, the minimum age to receive discount fares on the city’s cable cars was incorrectly given as 62. The correct minimum age is 65.
